Mr Kwan Ricky: 自問對Public Policy和Public Admin都有興趣, 有約2年工作經驗, 未來希望考政府工/做NGO(其中一條路)
我收到以下兩個Programme的offer, 請問哪個對我的前途較有幫助??

1. CityU MA in Public Policy and Management (part-time)
2. HKBU Master of Public Administration (part-time)

Dear Ricky,

Thank you for sharing with me about your choice in postgraduate studies.

I have looked at the program modules for both in details. Some of the module overlaps like finance and people management, and public administration policy study.

The one of HKBU is also supported by PACE University of New York and also the Chinese Academy of Social Science and the course emphases on international perspective. But HKBU offer one course on “Law and Public Administration” and Electives on PR and Media. The one on City U seems to emphasize course practicality and classmate networking but longer means more time and hard work needed.

They both have their pros and cons. But the critical success factor of adult learning part-time is TIME!

How much free time will have to complete the study?

In my experience in part-time studying, you are always struggling with time which is essential for learning. First the more you give to your study, the more you learn, the more time spent with your classmate doing course work, the better you know them and the network built which may be valuable to your future career development. Second, ironically the more time for study means you may need more financially to support yourself for longer years. Third, there are still a number of uncontrollable factors limiting the amount of time or money you may have in the next few years in your life, such as changing jobs or relocation, buying a property, having a relationship and getting married, all these naturally occurring to most young working adult life.

If you think you may encounter some of the issues then you should take the one that is the easiest to ensure you complete the course with minimum risks. Otherwise if everything is blue sky, then take the one that you can get the most learning and being practical to your work or future career choice.

You should try to find out from the 2 school of the employment prospect of the graduates then you will know what the Master Degree is useful for.

Good luck to your study.
