Dear Doc
I am looking to take a DBA course and need your advice.
I don't have a master's degree but I do hold a few professional qualifications. I have around 15+ yrs of working experience. My budget is limited.
Grateful if you could advise whether, and which, DBA course I could enrol to, thanks.

Hi Ranger,
Thank you for sharing your situation with us your intention to study DBA. I think it takes a very big commitment to study for a serious doctoral study including time and money for a good few years in your life. Before you take on this serious tasks, may I ask you to ask yourself “why want to do this and what will you do with the qualificaiton afterwards?”
A number of people that I know of studying DBA is for teaching in further education sectors and for some others, they are self business owners and want the “doctoral” title to improve their credential. Few others would do it for interest. If you are the former type that are either already teaching or thinking of teaching in the academy field that I would advise you engage in the DBA programs that are academically sound, locally accreditated which will be recognised by the proper academic insititutions such as the local universities for hiring teaching staff. However if you are the latter group, that you is if you are an entreprenuer who wants the qualification for credential, then there are a number of overseas DBA program available in HK.
As you know a locally accrediated DBA program such as the one run by the local university takes on average 3 to 6 years to complete. So you can see what you give in time, and what you pay is what you get out of the time engaged in the study. Some overseas DBA program claims you can complete in 2 years then you will have to make a judgement of how much learning you will gain by spending how much time in your study.Remember there is fast track in getting through exams but there is no fast track in gaining knowledge as an conventional wisdom.
With my own experience, effective time management is the whole essence of successful completion. Again you will come back to get how much time do you have in the next 5 years in your life; and how committed? Will your job and family allow you to have the time to do the study? And in terms of financing, you will have to make sure you have enough to cover the cost. I wonder if you also know that it also costs(but not significant amount) to conduct field research required for your doctoral thesis at the later stage of your study, that you need to budget for.
Regarding cost feee, some of the courses that I know of is flexible in payment, you only pay course as you choose the study them, you don’t have to pay in full upfront. Furthermore there are refund policy should you withdraw. So watch out for that.
Finally and most importantly, I feel in any doctoral study, you need to complete a doctoral thesis which is of no joke in terms of complexity of intellectual chanllenge as well as practical implementation research tasks and the final spotless write up ! To me I think it would be most important to see what kind of research support you would get from the teaching faculty……the lack of it would make it diffcult for you to move on to final completion.
One final word, for any courses that you would consider, you should first check what is the final successful graduation rate and why people pass or drop out. This gives you good ideas of what is takes to complete the course.
I have prompted many questions and you take time to gather information for decision, which afterall is one important decision in life and govern how you will spend in th next 3- 5 years.
I will be opening Dr Ed Forum in Facebook in Jan 2010, can keep in touch here or there.
Good luck to your study.
