Miss Alice Wong: Hi there! I'm a Canadian univeristy degree holder (BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice concentration in Law) and I am interested in becoming a Speech Therapist. What kind of programs should I look into if I want to study that field?

Other than police and correction, what kind of Criminology related field/ career would be opened to Criminology degree holder? Since I had left HK for a very long time, I'm not sure how the career path can be in here with my degree.
陳筱芬: Hi Alice,

You have passed me a difficult question to answer since Criminology is a rare subject in Hong Kong and many of the graduate goes into police, security protection or teaching/research in university related professions here in Hong Kong.

Since you have declared that you want to a speech therapist, then I will not suggest that you can take up practicing the legal profession which is of course something you can consider to your career in relation to Criminology and Criminal Justice concentration in Law, this is something that you are not interested.

Let’s talk about building a career in speech therapy in Hong Kong if you are really interested. You should be aware that if you are dealing with people with speech disability here in Hong Kong, as speech therapist, you will give them the help to improve speech in the Chinese language, in particular in Cantonese. Therefore the phonetics and phonology of Cantonese is very much the essence of the language to be improved.

The University of Hong Kong is the only place training up local speech therapist of Bachelor degree. You may want to see the 4 years Degree course content and the subjects covering speech therapy practice in Hong Kong. Please be aware that a good majority of them deal with the hearing science of the Chinese language.

I also searched the Professional Association of Speech Therapist in Hong Kong. Please see below for your reference of the private practitioners;

Since you already have a Bachelor degree, I have seen some Speech Therapist further studies the following Master Degree with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University:

MSc in Rehabilitation of People with Development Disabilities
發展障礙人士復康理學碩士學位

Please see below the Entrance requirements that are specified by this M.Sc programme
• A Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, nursing, social work, speech therapy, education, psychology or related professional degrees, or the equivalent, preferably with one year of work experience with people with developmental disabilities; OR

• A professional diploma in a related rehabilitation field from a recognized institution or the equivalent, two years of work experience with people with developmental disabilities.
Furthermore the following is a write up of the career prospect of practicing speech therapist in Hong Kong for your interest:

I think I have given you quite a bit of information to digest and you need to spend more time think about your career change because you will need to invest time to get into a new subject dimension in a Chinese language setting here, and moving back to Hong Kong to study again. But if you want to be a speech therapist in Canada, then I think you would know how to get there more than I do.

Good luck to your study!

Best regards,

Fanny Chan
