I have got the BBA at Sunderland Uni in England, finished postgraduate diploma in accountancy at LU and Postgraduate Diploma in Education at HKU. I would like to survive in the education field then I am considering to study Master next year. In fact, I would like to teach Accounting or business related courses at IVE. Therefore, I would like to enroll in Master of Corporate Governance,Master of Accountancy at City U or MPA at HKU. Would you mind giving me suggestions?? |

Hi Roy,
Thank you for your interest in Dr Ed Forum.
With your last qualification in Education, it looks like you are serious about teaching in Tertiary education. I think before you get study for a master in order to get into teaching, you should think which subject in the business discipline you are interested to teach and you can also teach well. This is important as with teaching in business, you need to update yourself with new knowledge, and if you are not interested in the subject, it is affect you teaching enthusiasm and performance if you are not interested in keep developing new horizon into the subject itself.
In this case if you are interested in teaching accounting, then you should study a Master which is focused into such subject. But I will give you an alternate view is that if you are not too sure what to teach yet, then you should not narrow yourself too much and then you can look into some Master course with strong emphasis in Finance and accounting modules incorporating other business scope in order to give you a wider choice.
I have searched the web for a recent job description in “Teaching Assistant or Lecturer in Finance” from Open University Hong Kong for you as reference, you may want to see how well you match the requirements in a few years time after you completed the study.
Lecturer/Teaching Assistant (Finance)
Duties
The appointees of Lecturer will mainly be responsible for the planning, development and delivery of face-to-face and distance learning courses in related disciplines at undergraduate level. They will also be expected to get involved/assist in research activities and to participate in University/professional/community services.
The appointees of Teaching Assistant will be required to assist in and where necessary, undertake course planning, development and delivery in related disciplines including classroom teaching. They will also be expected to participate in University/professional/community services.
Requirements
Applicants for Lecturer should have at least a higher degree, preferably a doctoral degree, in a relevant field while applicants of Teaching Assistant should have at least an honors degree, preferably a higher degree in a relevant discipline. Relevant professional/teaching experience is required for Lecturer and will be an added asset for Teaching Assistant. A good command of English and Chinese (preferably including Putonghua) is required.
Finally, I would like to point out that for teaching post in Tertiary education, it would be useful to have working experience in the business world, also membership of a professional association such as in accounting or marketing would be useful asset to add to the job application as teaching staff.
I stress again that you should ask yourself what is your strongest and most interested subject, and this will help your decision to what to teach in the future.
