Mr Derek Lo: I'm a Chartered Engineer & MHKIE (in Building Services) in my early 30. I got my undergrad degree in Canada (FT) and MSc in UK (DL). I also got a LLB form UOL (2:2 so little hope to get into PCLL). I'm looking for MBA right now. I can't quit my job due to financial burden and would like to seek which DL programme is good:

1) Strathclyde-HKBU
2) Balford - RDI
3) Hull - APMI
2) MBS (may be too expensive for me)
3) Adeliade (Hopkins still do this? or LU do this)
陳筱芬: Hi Derek,

Thank you for your enquiry about your study.

Given you are a highly qualified professional in engineering already attained a postgraduate degree and also with a law degree in your pocket, I am wondering if you are considering a career change from the MBA study?

There are numerous choices of MBA in the market, but the choice rests with the diversity of program themes, design and delivery mode, teaching support, class student mix or the networking, length of the course, graduation requirement and of course the $$$price.

I have written a few articles analyzing different MBA courses, see below:

http://blog.eduplus.com.hk//Fanny/myblog_detail.jsp?post_id=1507

And also there is an online guide on China Executive Education Guide covering more than 30 MBA in Hong Kong and China for your reference.

However I have developed a list of on checking the Quality of overseas course provision in Hong Kong, you may use the checklist to consider the quality of the MBA courses you mentioned in different teaching and learning support aspects, for making a decision of your choice.

But frankly judging from your background already with a Master degree, engineering background and a law degree, I am wondering if you have ever considered doing a DBA degree, Doctor of Business Administration instead of another Master degree? After all, it is getting common to have a Master degree nowadays and it is worth considering the potential of what a doctoral degree can bring. A lot of DBA candidates that I know go into professional consultancy, training and teaching in their own field.

There are a number of DBA courses being offered in the market and it does cost more than an average MBA in tuition fee. Some of the local DBA programs are from PolyU, HK Baptist U, and CityU. There are overseas program mainly from Australia and UK and some of them are still opened for enrollment. You may be surprised to see that you may match the entry requirements to some of the program. Think about it and its potential vs. the financial cost.

Good luck to your study!

Best regards,

Fanny Chan

Thanks Fanny for the analysis. I'm not looking for a career change. But I'd like to get an MBA for a boost in advancement in near future. And it's also good to establish a useful nexus through the study. I've also looked into the Aust offers such as AGSM & MGSM. But they're quite pricey (>$230k for both) and seems they receive little accreditation and have less favourable ranking in FT (compares to Strathclyde).

Is the quality and reputation of Hull ok? the price is really attractive. i noticied it has no place in FT ranking.
For Bradford, I think the price is really close to SBS and I might opt for SBS instead of Bradford
Is Strathclyde really a quality programme on her own?
for local U, only CityU falls within my arm's reach. but the enrollement for the coming semester already closed. . . .

I'd really like to try Warwick or MBS but I can't afford a 9-day trip to UK every yr and the HK$240k tution fee.

Hi Derek,

It is good that we can continue our conversation in this new forum feature.

Since most of your education is achieved overseas, it is natural that you want to develop a local network to career advancement and this is a good way.

The way I see it that the networking of local MBA courses is much stronger than those overseas course in Hong Kong. The reason is very simple; it is because the faculty of the local university is responsible for the design and organization of the course, which includes all aspects from teaching and to alumni network. A stronger alumni network and a more valuable asset for future class intake as this is after all a "word of month" marketing industry.

With overseas courses providers, it is a bit hard for them to organize this network from aboard unless they have some very committed alumni as volunteer to organize the local resources.

Manchester Business School is reputable in quality and has a well-managed local alumni network

The FT ranking is one of the right places to look because so will your employers. Your final question now is how much you can afford with time? With money, you can save or you can earn later.

Cheers, Fanny
