I have just completed an MA in Translation. Besides I attained a Master of Information Systems, PgC/D in Translation, MIL., German certificate. My job is related to administration, so I did not have hands-on translation experience. I am very frustrated in my job and want to quit before landing a new one. I know it is risky for a middle age to start a new a career like translator. Now I am at my crossroads, to quit or not to quit, that is a question. Thanks very much. |

Thanks for sharing your situation with us.
Making a career choice is never easy, at any age. Judging from your learning interest, I think you are interested in language and writing. Translation is a very important language communication skill and also nowadays a very valuable asset for Chinese and English bilingual translation for the booming economy of China and the world. Furthre more this is a very flexible life long job skills, full time or part time.
I research www.headlinejobs.hk for the job “translator”; there are basically a few types of translator needed in the market of Hong Kong:
1. Financial information translation
2. Legal information translation
3. PR and media information and editorial writing
4. Language specific translation such as Japanese,
The following is a very typical of the job requirements of a translator job,
- University graduate in English, Translation or Journalism
- Few years of translation and editorial experience in the an industry (finance/legal/media)
- Excellent command of English and Chinese;
- Able to translate between Chinese and English in a speedy and accurate manner
- Writing flair and computer literacy;
- Willingness to learn;
- Independent, willing to learn and able to work under pressure with tight deadlines
- Shift duties and overtime work required
Before you change your current job, you should really check the list to see if you like all of the above requirements. If you are not sure, I would suggest you to take some freelance job/ part time job to experience what it is really like, to build up your portfolio, subject expertise and industry connection, then decide later if you like it enough to change it as a career change to minimize risks of changing everything all at the same time.
