Mr Roy Tang: Having participated in Engineering field for ~8 yrs with a relevant Higher Diploma, I would like to apply for positions such as police inspector, Station Officer (Fire Services Dept), etc.

In order to strengthen my application, I would like to get a degree. Would you pls advise whether BA, HRM, Project Management is suitable or any other better choice?

Besides, Should there be certain extent of credit exemption for taking the said courses based on a HDip in Engineering?

Thx!
陳筱芬: Dear Roy,

Thank you for your enquiry and interest in Dr Ed Q&A Forum. Regarding your interest in joining as police inspector, I visit the Hong Kong Police Force recruitment website as well as calling up the Hong Police Force to try to get you some up-to-date accurate advise, I think there are 2 main parts that you should consider in considering joining the police;

1.Entry requirement for Inspector (as published in their website)

Academic Requirements
-A Hong Kong degree, or equivalent; or
-An accredited Associate Degree from Hong Kong tertiary institution /A Higher Diploma from a Hong Kong polytechnic / polytechnic university, or a Diploma from a registered post-secondary college awarded after the date of its registration, or equivalent; or
-A pass in two subjects at Advanced Level in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (2A) plus three other subjects at grade C or above in the HKCEE (3O), or equivalent.

Language Proficiency Requirements
-Applicants should possess Level 2 (or Grade E before 2007) or above in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B before 2007) in the HKCEE or equivalent. Applicants not meeting the above requirement may still apply. They will be exempted from this requirement if they are able to pass the Chinese and English Papers in the Written Examination during the selection exercise of Inspectors.
-Be able to read and write Chinese and speak fluent Cantonese.

Since the selection of police inspectors will be based on a number of attributes competency (as published in their website);

-Communication
-Judgement
-Knowledge
-Confidence
-Leadership
-Staff Management
-Resources Management
-Community and Customer Focus
-Personality

Physical Fitness
As with your case with a higher diploma qualification with local university, you will be qualify to apply. Furthermore with your 8 years of working experience, should you have been engaged and with demonstrable achievement any of the above attributes, especially in leadership and management, will be an asset to your application.

2. Further Study to Degree
I was told, there is no special subject preference to add advantage to the selection process. But the key to success of selection process is about getting through the 4 stages examination,

-Written Examination
-Extended Interview
-Final Interview Board
-Physical Fitness Test

The whole selection process can take quite sometime to complete, one examination stage after the other can take a few months. Should you be successful to get recruited at the end, then you will take up 9 months full time police inspector training.

By that, I think if you choose to study for interest and self-enhancement, you should bear in mind to be flexible to be able to accommodate the change should you be recruited to the police force and not to get your study wasted.

3. My Tips to you
Be well prepared for all the examinations - having talked to the Police force, the recruitment information is very well-laid out in their web site, including the “Model Examination Questions” for Chinese and English written test, as well as the Extended Interviews”. I suggest you study the material to evaluate your readiness in the application. If you are not so ready yet then get yourself ready first before making a career change or the next application.

The latest recruitment date for Probationary Inspector is also scheduled for October this year (as published in their website)

Finally, I have found the following Recruitment FAQ very useful for applicant, I attach for your reference,

I think you have lots to do and get yourself best prepared to get a sure win. It will be a challenge and a great learning opportunity. I wish you every success.
