Judy: I have been an ex. assistant for 7 years. Mainly focus on secretarialsupport senior magt. in sizable firms. I graduated fm LU in 2000 (BS social science). Since I want to secure my job as I find it is very hard to change job field esp. you have certain amount of high salary. So, I decided to have a MBA to support me to serve a bigger boss. So, have applied City U MBA. The problem is my 1st deg. GPA is low(2nd low) so I don't think they'll accept me. Pls suggest me a suitable MBA?
陳筱芬: Hi Judy,

Thank you for your interest in Dr Ed Forum.

At your age, doing a postgraduate qualification such as MBA seems to be a right thing to do in order to progress in your career. There are many choices out there, and remember people go to study for two reasons, for learning and for networking to meet some new classmates, so it really depends on your need.

But looking at your case being a very competent secretarial support for your boss for 7 years, I imagine your work involves a lot of coordination and routine duties support to the senior management. Being a more of generalist at this stage, I would ask you to think more seriously about taking a more professionally recognized business role such as in sales, marketing, purchasing, finance etc which is independent of who you work for should you want to build a career with personal business track record.

Having worked 7 years an in an industry, I think you will have a good self-evaluation of your likes and dislikes, you should get yourself into a business role first, then you will face business management problems that can help you to identify which MBA course would be relevant to your need and doing the course can help you to sharpen your business skills.

I had a staff who was in a very similar to your situation; she started as a coordinator to the senior management for a few years and then chose to change to become a Marketing Executive and realized that she needed to strengthen her skills in Marketing discipline and finally decided to do a MBA course with strong emphasis in Marketing to help her to progress in her career.

If I were you, I will definitely think about what career I would like to build for myself which is far more important than worrying about getting an MBA to serve which bigger boss soon.

Good luck to you.
