Mr Andrew Wong: Ms Chan,
Having been working in China for 15years in IT field, I have big worry about my career in coming future. Although I am the GM of an IT firm with 50 employee, I have problem in managing the team. My background is M.SC in EE CU and now around 35 years old. The business theory side is very weak.
Now, I am thinking of study MBA or EMBA. Any advice from your professional point of view ? I think my worry is very common in my age for those how spend long time in China.

陳筱芬: Dear Andrew,

Thank you for sharing your work situation with me. First of all, I think the problem of managing the team may not be just coming from you; every company has a few percent of problem staff too. So don’t take it entirely on yourself.

But still, being the GM, you still need to resolve the problem. I think you understand you situation and the answer to your problem. For my recent knowledge, the average age of MBA class is from 28 – 33 with average working years of 6 – 8 years, mostly middle mangers. With EMBA class the average age being 37+ with at least over 10 years working experience of senior levels of managers, which seems to fit in your present situation. People go to study for two reasons, for learning and for networking to meet some new classmates.

There are so many choices in EMBA courses nowadays, with different business focuses, some of them are taken in multi-locations as well. So if you are seriously thinking of applying, you should be practical and consider a place you can conveniently travel to every month for a weekend. Depending where you are located in China, an eMBA course in one of the cities in China would be more suitable to you.

I have published a “2007 China Executive Education Guide” with the overview of 30 Business Schools in Hong Kong and China which I think will be a very useful reference to you. You can register as member of the following website as member to download the on-line copy.

You also need to consider a few more things; some business school may need you to take GMAT exam on entry requirements. Also will you have the time and commitment to complete the intensive course work months after months for at least 2 years? There is a list of factors to be taken seriously before a decision is made and so be prepared.

You are now at good timing as graduate business school are now recruiting for 2008 intake and information session are usually held around October and November, so do watch out the schools that you are interested. Information is usually also well-laid out in the school website.

Pursuing study is always a good strategy to stay competitive! Good luck to you.
