Hi,
Thank you for writing to me and sharing your circumstance. I am replying your question in English assuming you must have a very good comprehension of English since you have scored Grade 7 in IELTS.
I have done some research for you to help you to make judgment in your decision. I wonder if you have compared both Southampton and York Universities. In my opinion both are them are good universities. Southampton has been established in 1862 with more than 20000 students and nearly 5000 teaching staff, while York was founded in 1963 with 11,000 students now.
Return on investment in Career
I think you need to understand that most economic graduates go into finance related industries such as banking, accountancy, insurance etc. Yes, they are paid well in graduate jobs in this region if you have good grades and hired by big firms. What Southampton put in their career overview of the course your applied is very true and realistic.
“While many people study economics aiming for one of the obvious "economics careers", an economics degree can also be an opening into many other careers, and economics graduates can be found in all walks of life.
Typical "economics career" options include banking, finance, working as a specialist economist with national or international organisations (e.g. OECD, World Bank, IMF, United Nations), tax advisory work, insurance and trading. However, the majority of these will also require a postgraduate economics qualification, at least to Masters level.
Many economics graduates choose to pursue professional accountancy training, either because they wish to work in accountancy or less obviously because a combination of economics and accountancy training can be especially attractive to employers. Moreover, our economics degrees allow exemption from certain professional requirements.
Non "economics career" options include management training, consultancy, civil service, utilities and their regulation, journalism, politics and ICT.
Of course, some economics graduates will pursue a higher degree in economics, and some may then proceed into research and academia.
Typical destinations for economics graduates are:
*30% business & finance professionals
*18% commercial, industrial, public sector managers
*10 % business & finance associate professionals
*20% administrative, clerical, secretarial positions
*5% media, sales, advertising, PR etc
*17% others, inc. teaching, IT, health, retail, uniformed services, etc “

Your interest in dealing with figures
Are you interested in dealing with figures? I am asking this because studying actuarial science, there are lots of aspects dealing with pure mathematics and solving figure problems leaving the social science aspects aside. Are you really interested in doing or can you tolerate to take it as a job and develop a career?
Long Term Training and Apprenticeship
As you know degree in Economics possibly will possibly lead you to a career of accountancy or actuary. Both are highly professional jobs and after graduation, you still have to take a long road of studying, taking exams under pressure to eventually get qualified to the chartered status. You need to be prepared to face that if you are to pursue a career in either of them, the actuary one is even harder, that’s why there are few qualified and they are of course paid well.
Actuary Career Prospect – Booming in China
The booming market of insurance industry in China, there is a critical shortage of qualified actuary needed. I attach two new links for your reference:
