| Mr Albert Wong: |

Dear Albert,
Thank you for your interest in Dr Ed forum and I appreciate your effort in putting very concise description of yourself which helps me to put a more meaningful answer to your question.
So you are trained as Statistician with 3 years working experience in media research now. Before going into which master course to take, can I ask you to ask yourself again,
1. What are your motivation factors for pursuing further studies in relation to media?
2. Do you presently enjoy your work in media research and you want to pursue a "career" in the field ?
3. Why do you want to study and how will you use your master degree in the future ?
The reason why I am asking a few questions is that there are usually three general scenarios for people to pursue further studies,
1. From generalist to specialist - want to improve or specialise in the present work competency requirement or having a clear career interest, e.g. from BBA to MA in Marketing, or BA in Economic to MSc in Finance.
2. From specialist to generalist - want to switch career from a highly specialised subject field, usually from academic subjects, to a more general and applied field, so that there are wider choice of jobs, e.g. BA in English or Mathematics to MBA or BSc in Mechanical Engineering to MSc in IT Management.
3. From purely exploring personal interest point of view, the decision is not associated to career change or impact to work.
Then I ask you to think again, which of the above scenarios is likely to be your own case. The most down to earth questions to ask yourself are that do you like the field you are in now and what kind of career prospect is likely to offer to you five years down the road. You can simply look around at the senior professionals of your field and you will have a good idea to see if this is what you want. If so, what other skills would you need to do the job well, if not, you want to think hard what do you want to do and then map to get there. If you are undecided, I tell you most people will have better ideas after at least 5 years of working experience because they finally settled down in their working life after changing a few jobs and finally have better ideas of what they want and what they don't know in their job.
Regarding the two courses that you refer to which are very interesting, each one have their own merits and different level of approach to understand the new media age, be it conceptual or practical. I have two suggestions, first when evaluating a course, I always look at teaching experience and quality. It is essential to know the number of year of establishment or student intake of the course, track record of teaching experience of faculty staff in terms of full- time staff, a detail course curriculum of the different modules, student support facilities relevant to the field to enable student to study effectively, course during and fee, finally the total number of graduates produced and what are the outcome of the students. These all contribute to the credibility of the course. The more solid information they are able to supply openly, the more established in the experience they are able to share on the course to help you to make a decision.
The second suggestion is that in this time point of your career life, are you engaged in any management responsibility? Management courses are usually more relevant at the stage of your career when you have a real work situation problem to apply what you learn to make you think. If you are not at that stage yet, you may find it difficult to adopt a feasible context to do your course assignment and case study in management.
Think again, you still have time. Free feel to discuss with me again when you have put some analysis to your own career mapping.
