Are You Capitalizing on Your Strengths? (I)

One of the qualities common to most "achievers" is that they are extremely self-reliant. They see themselves as the main source of their success and as the main cause of their problems and difficulties. They refuse to make excuses or to blame people. Instead, they look for ways to overcome obstacles.

To achieve everything of which you are capable, you must play to your strengths and that is something Hong Kong people have become very good at. Most people in Hong Kong start off with little more than their ability to work. However, many of the territory's millionaires started with nothing. Some have been broke, or nearly broke during their young adult years but the ones who eventually made it did things in ways that set them apart from everyone else. Perhaps the most important thing they did was to figure out how they could best capitalize on their strengths and abilities.

One of the greatest responsibilities in life is to identify, develop and maintain an important marketable skill. You need to be very good at doing something for which t here is a strong market demand. In other words, you need a competitive advantage.

There are four keys to making the most of your strengths. These are just as applicable to large companies as they are to individuals who want to accomplish things in their lives:

1. Specialise. No one can be all things to all people. Specialization is the key. People who are successful have general skills but they also have one or two areas where they have developed the ability to perform in an outstanding manner. The major reason why so many people are finding their jobs being eliminated and then struggling to find employment is because they didn't look ahead and prepare themselves for the time when their current jobs would expire.

Let's share the other 3 keys in next chapter.
