上回我們提到「SMS」短訊的縮寫，今期將會介紹一下省略字。「SMS」短訊的省略字並不等於一些平常合乎文法的簡寫字，如「don't」或「they're」，但他們兩者之目的是相同的：都是將不必要的字母省略，而同時保持意思清晰。通常這類字的母音會被省略，但仍然保留這個字的大概讀音，例如數目字「8」有時候會取代一些有「eight」這發音的字，所以「later」就會寫成「l8r」。數目字「4」則會取替「for」，而數目字「2」這個音就替代了「to」。以下為一些「SMS」短訊省略字的例子：
SMS contractions aren't the same as regular ones like "don't" or "they're", but the purpose is the same: to remove unnecessary parts of words while keeping the meaning clear. As you can see, writing this way can be complicated, and you should have a good grasp of English before trying to shorten your messages. Using too many abbreviations will make your SMS confusing to the reader or look unprofessional with your business contacts.

「SMS」短訊絕對是非常方便，但它應使用在一般對話中，而非傳送給你的老闆。要特別注意的是，短訊很容易會被人保存及再傳送給其他人。如果一不小心，更可能會傳送給錯誤的對象，以致自己陷入尷尬情況之中。因此，當下次你要傳送非常私隱的訊息時，切記在按下「傳送」鍵前，先檢閱一番，不然你或會將傳給情人的短訊誤傳給你的老闆了！

SMS is definitely convenient, but it should be used for casual conversations while keeping your audience in mind. You shouldn't be sending text messages to your boss! Additionally, remember that messages sent can easily be saved and retrieved, or even sent to the wrong person - so you may find yourself in an embarrassing situation if you are not cautious! The next time you want to send a very personal message think carefully before you press the "Send" button or you might end up sending your boss a message meant for your sweetheart!
